First there were green roofs,
now comes the advent of Green Walls.

During June 2008, Pantiles Landscapes have been carrying out the installation of 820 sqm of green walls on behalf of BioTecture. BioTecture Ltd won the prestigious contract with Ballymore Properties / Lancsville Construction to install 820m2 of green walling to a major new development at Leamouth Peninsula, Docklands, London. This will be the biggest greenwall to date in the UK and is designed by Patrick Blanc.

BioTecture Ltd is a company dedicated to designing and implementing green wall systems for buildings and the built environment. Plants are grown vertically in their patented modular, hydroponic-fed system. The benefits of green walling include reduced thermal loading on buildings, water and air filtration, reduced heat island effect, sound and stormwater attenuation, creation of urban ecological habitat, plus exciting and uplifting human urban environments.

Biotecture as a science and art is still in its infancy, with a lot of work to do to develop new systems. Working with architects is important to integrate biomembranes into new build, but the largest potential may lie in retrofitting biomembranes to existing buildings, as these will always comprise the majority of our building stock.
