NEW GREEN WALL AT PANTILES

Our new “Green Wall” has been in place since November, built onto the side of our Design Studio. More than twice the size of our previous installation, it contains new plant varieties, and demonstrates the workings of a fully automatic watering and feeding system.

Green walls are a very new concept in the UK, and the company who installed the wall with Pantiles, Biotecture, are constantly experimenting with different plants to see which are most at home when growing vertically. Despite the fact we are in the middle of winter, the Pantiles green wall has patches of colour, thanks to Vinca minor and its bright blue flowers.

In June 2008 Pantiles Landscapes installed a 820 square metre green wall at a development in the London Docklands, designed by the French “green wall guru” Patrick Blanc. Since this is the biggest green wall to date in the UK, it is not surprising that Pantiles receives many enquiries every week on the topic.

What was wrong with the old green wall, you may ask? Nothing, is the answer. With the increase in interest in vertical gardening, we wanted to give our customers something bigger and better to look at. The old wall looked fabulous to the finish, and could have gone on for at least another year without any maintenance. We did decide not to use Phormiums in the future, however, as they somewhat swamped the other ground cover plants.

Particularly of interest to property developers and garden designers looking for something fresh and unique, Pantiles is also able to supply green walls on a small scale to anyone in the South East and London. The walls are made of small units that are fitted together to create the desired size. The smallest section one can purchase is less than a square metre in size, and the effect does not have to be one continuous block. On the contrary, many green walls across Surrey are installed in a checkerboard fashion.
